Justin Thomas, full name Justin Louis Thomas, is an American golfer who won his first “major” at the 99th PGA Championship at Quail Hollow Club in Charlotte, North Carolina, in 2017.
Thomas, who was born in Louisville, Kentucky, on April 29, 1993, was only the fourth golfer to win a major and record five victories in a single season before turning 25.
(Jack Nicklaus, Tiger Woods, and Jordan Spieth were the other golfers.) He finished second in the season-ending Tour Championship, giving him enough points to take home the coveted FedEx Cup and its $10 million award. He received the 2017 PGA Player of the Year award.
Thomas hails from a long line of golf professionals. His father (also his swing coach) was the Head Professional at Harmony Landing Country Club in Goshen, Kentucky, and his grandpa was a 60-year PGA Tour veteran who played in the 1962 U.S. Open.
Thomas’ golf skills were immediately apparent. Prior to his junior year of high school, in 2009, he finished third in a PGA Tour tournament, the Wyndham Championship, becoming only the third youngest player in history to make the cut on the PGA Tour at the age of 16 years, 3 months, and 23 days.
He earned the Haskins and Nicklaus honours, which are given yearly to the nation’s greatest collegiate golfer, while playing for the University of Alabama in 2012, and he turned professional the following year at the age of 20. 2014 saw him claim his first Web.com tour victory, and 2016 saw him claim his first PGA triumph at the CIMB Classic in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
Thomas has shot some of the lowest scores in golf history and is known for being an expert long putter as well as one of the game’s top power players and big hitters.
He shot a course record of 61 to win his first PGA event, and in 2017, at the Sony Open in Hawaii, he shot a 59 to set a new record for the youngest player in PGA history to shoot a score under 60.
He went on to win by seven shots. Additionally, he shot a 63 during the 2017 U.S. Open in Wisconsin’s Erin Hills, matching the major’s lowest round score.
